Gravity
Mexico City
In 2020, Chain + Siman was selected to design one of the six VIP pop-up restaurants for Millesime, serving a six-course haute cuisine menu to around 100 diners over three days.
With cinema as that year’s theme, they decided to draw inspiration from and reinterpret Alfonso Cuarón’s science fiction feature film Gravity, set in space, where astronauts end up stranded under harsh survival conditions.
The story, combined with the focus on culinary art, became the starting point for creating a space with a unique concept. The formal representation of the restaurant, based on the film’s minimalist visual and auditory aesthetics, aims to evoke a sense of introspection and darkness, as one would experience in outer space. The design ensures that guests feel comfortable while being transported to an environment that represents the cold and inhospitable, yet where the lightness of the elements makes a difference and remains memorable for diners.
One of the key elements in achieving this was the use of Swiss modular furniture by USM Modular Furniture, which conveys both geometry and space technology; at the same time, its modular attribute allows the furniture to be arranged and adapted to meet any specific requirement. Additionally, the lighting design, featuring hundreds of spheres suspended as if levitating, represents the stars, sunlight, and the universe flecks of light in the dark space
